About the Competition

How to enter AsiaWPA International Competition?

AsiaWPA International Photography and Videography Competition has been held for 10 consecutive years, and is highly regarded and recommended in the industry worldwide.

AsiaWPA offers two types of competitions each year. The first one is by online submission, held twice a year, namely First-Half and Second-Half of the year. There are 19 competition categories in which you can submit your work. First, Second and Third Place winners and the Excellence Award winners receive award trophies or certificates from AsiaWPA. The competitions are opened to both members and non-members.

The second type of competition is the Annual Award Judging. This however is not a separate competition. In order to participate in the Annual Award Judging, participants must have already won the awards in the First-Half or the Second-Half competitions. The work will then go through a final annual review, and only the best ones could win the AsiaWPA Annual Grand Awards, Gold Awards, Silver Awards and Bronze Awards. Those awards are presented at the AsiaWPA Annual Conference & Award Ceremony Dinner held in Hong Kong at the beginning of each year. There is no fee for participating in the Annual Award Judging (of course the work must first win an award in the First or Second Half competitions).

The Judging Panel of AsiaWPA Competitions consists of esteemed international judges, who have already won many awards and obtained qualifications such as FMPA/AMPA, AsiaWPA's Photographers of the Year, US WPPI Master or UK MPA, and have repeatedly served as judges in many international competitions such as AsiaWPA, WPPI and MPA. The judges this year include, in no particular order, Roger Tan, Keda Z, Aries Tao, Johnson Wee, Jodie Andrews, Liu Lei, Mike Chien, David Wong, Raymond Phang, Tracey Taylor, Dee Green,Ben Connolly,Nagayuki Kojima, Mayad Studios, Jonathan Chong, Dennis Chang, Essie @GoldenLove Production, Tony Tsui, Philip Tsang, Jack Chan.. All the judges process very deep experience and techniques in shooting and judging photos.

During the judging of competition photos, each piece of work is scored according to techniques applied during actual shooting and post-production. Factors that are taken into account include shooting skills, composition, use of light, posture, post work ability, light and dark processing, color, character processing, story, originality, impact and other different elements, before the final score is given. Of course, it is of utmost importance that judges actually provide written comments, so that participants could learn how to improve their skills and techniques.

Motion videos have become more and more important due to the rise of social media platforms. There are more and more people who used to use traditional text images now prefer shooting and sharing videos. A major reason is that videos are obviously more eye-catching compared with reading and listening to text content. As such, videos are better for capturing the emotion of the subject through the combined use of picture and sound. Shooting videos have become a trend and people do now put more focus on it. Therefore, AsiaWPA has become one of the first Asian photography associations to launch video categories in its competitions, serving also videographers around the world.

For videography competitions, AsiaWPA offer three categories. Apart from wedding video and wedding concept film, there is also a category that relates to non-wedding, including commercial short films, documentary VLOG, people & scenery and etc. The judges of the competition are the top video recording teams from different countries, including Alvin Paver @ Mayad Studios (Philippines), Santo Widjaja @ Paper Cranes (Australia), Essie Chang@Golden Love (China). Videos are judged based on shooting skills, action pace, whether the theme is clearly shown, picture composition, time control and coordination, the compatibility of the video clips and music, the concept of the work, etc. are all used as a reference to give the final score.

Don’t miss this opportunity and get the international recognition from the industry. Get AsiaWPA Award Points by winning the First, Second, Third place or Excellence Awards, which would assist upgrading your membership level. There is also a chance to win the honour of AsiaWPA Photographer of the Year, so that more people in the world could see your work and effort. Seize the chance!
